Aquariums 101

How do aquatic life get sick ?
1) Chemicals used on aquatic life debilitate and create opportunities
for parasites to infest aquatic life.
2) Left where they were these aquatic life would not be sick.

How do parasites get on my fish ?
1. Parasites are always present in the aquarium.
2. It takes debilitated/susceptible aquatic life before you see parasites.
3. It's not uncommon for a tank to wipe out, except for one fish.

Commonly Used Chemicals
Copper is used to reduce parasites on aquatic life. Copper also removes
the protective slime coating from fish. Removal of the slime coating
allows parasites, fungus, bacteria, viruses etc,. to infest/re-infest fish.

Copper (a toxic heavy metal) accumulates in the aquarium where overuse
cannot be controlled and overdose commonly occurs.

Parasites appear on debilitated/susceptible fish within 2 or 3 days after
being removed from a copper laden aquarium. The longer fish are kept in
tanks treated with copper the more likely they are to be (re)-infested when
they are removed to a clean (no chemicals) tank.

Copper accumulates in and inhibits pancreatic digestive secretions.

Cyanide is used to capture/ship/hold aquatic life. Cyanide causes
hemorrhaging (red patches on fish) which usually result in the death of
the fish. Copper and cyanide kill invertebrate.

All drugs/chemicals accumulate in the aquarium and/or out-gas
(evaporate) their toxic chemicals into the room.
